Life on the Hallig Island

The Hallig – farmland reclaimed from the North Sea over centuries by heaping up artificial islands in tidal mudflats – of Nordstrandischmoor is home to 18 people. They get by without a supermarket, doctor, movie theater, or disco. In the winter, they are often cut off from the outside world by raging seas. But many inhabitants of the Hallig cannot imagine living on dry land
